Thanks for taking the time out to reply Nick.
Best of luck with the project.
I'm already quite involved with NC.

Cheers, Geoff

Hi Geoff, thanks for your comment. Your aims are similar to Poundbury, the contexts less so - New Cumnock has a very different economy from Dorchester.

There are better ways of moving forward it than locals sending their ideas to me - my unpaid professional time is already committed on other projects. But you're in the lucky and unusual position of having two potentially very useful avenues already open to you.

Firstly, the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment - who are behind Poundbury - are currently looking at the future of New Cumnock and 3 other East Ayrshire towns. There was a public workshop last week where they were keen to get community input. It would be worth you contacting them to find out more.

And secondly, your very own New Cumnock Community Council was involved with the Prince's Foundation workshop last week. They seem to share your ideas of what makes a good community. Supporting and working with them would be the best way to make change happen.

Five miles south of Cumnock lies New Cumnock, a town with a much longer history than Cumnock. How much money would it take to convert New Cumnock into a "Poundberry" as I see a lot of similarities. [...the concerns could be described as reducing our reliance on the private car, better placemaking, and creating ‘mixed use’ urban development. In other words not just housing, or offices, or industry - but providing homes, jobs and community facilities all in one neighbourhood which is small enough to get around on foot. ]

How do locals get their ideas to you?
